# Chart of Accounts

The **Chart of Accounts** is used to create and manage accounting ledgers and groups within the system. It allows users to directly create ledgers (except Debtors and Creditors), modify existing ledger or group names, link analysis levels, and enter opening balances.

This module forms the foundation of the accounting system and ensures proper classification of financial transactions.

## Steps to Create Chart of Accounts

Step 1: Navigate to the **General Ledger** module.

1. Click **Masters 1** from the menu.
2. Select the **Chart of Accounts** option.

* The **Chart of Accounts** screen will be displayed.

On the left side of the screen, the system provides four main accounting groups: **Assets, Liabilities, Income** and **Expenses.**

* These primary groups are pre-configured in the system. In addition, multiple subgroups are also available by default. Users can further:

1. Create new subgroups under existing groups
2. Create custom groups as required.

On the right side of the screen, users can manage ledgers and groups. The system provides options to create, modify, or manage accounting entries efficiently.

**Toolbar Options**

The following buttons are available at the top of the screen:

* New - Used to create a new **ledger or group**.![](https://4060887901-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F2ktZUs9CJyincVDXEmrM%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-d09f550c6bd56427ed43b641941e77c37738d051%2FScreenshot%20From%202026-06-10%2012-21-21.png?alt=media)

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.rbsgo.com/general-ledger/general-ledger-module/gl-masters/gl-masters-chart-of-accounts.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
